The concept of ‘joyful experience’ may not be considered when visiting a sanitary ware store; the main purpose would be to find a product among a pool of similar-looking toilets and basins bombarding every wall and floor. Roca Plaza by EDGE redefines the space into a place of delight infused with the Mediterranean identity of the brand. Located inside a Hong Kong furniture store COLOURLIVING, the project is designed with the concept of an ‘outdoor square’, considering its position in the middle surrounded by multi-brand stores. It becomes a central space with multiple entrances for the visitors to easily navigate. Upon this open plan, items are displayed in rows and by groups, just like chess pieces on a board. Items with low height, such as bathtubs and toilets, form the front rows, and wash basins and wall-hung products are housed in a free-standing pavilion at the back. Displaying items in a parade is the simplest, yet very grand gesture that is also highly adaptable and allows high density of products.
Variations of design exist in two phases: temporary event and permanent installation. Quick turnover was made for the Roca Summer Fiesta event by giving walls and floor bands of strong red and yellow colours representing Spanish flags. It boldly celebrated the Spanish origin of Roca. For the main design, light and intense green marble with white veins is chosen as the main material to bring in the serene beauty of natural stone and sea waves. Responding to the fast-changing nature of a retail store, smaller items are displayed on black matt panels which can be easily replaced.
